Previous DiscussionsThe Daystrom Institute has built up a wealth of material in its years-long history, which you can read in our. Other resourcesLooking for?Looking for? The character of Kor in TOS looks like all Klingons in TOS, with the smooth foreheads. This was retconned in ENT as the Qu'Vat virus (augment virus). Afterward, there were many books that expanded upon this idea by creating the QuchHa', or 'The Unhappy Ones,' a whole race of Klingons who inherited the Qu'Vat, and the HemQuch, which are unaffected by the virus.

In the books, the HemQuch are the upper class/caste Klingons, and the QuchHa' the lower. Now, we all know that the shows and films are alpha canon and that the books are beta canon, which can be contradicted and disregarded by the show and movie writers. But so far, Discovery has been borrowing from the books quite a bit. The recent introduction of Control, for example, comes from the novels by David Mack. So, given that Kol and Kol-Sha both do not appear to be afflicted with teh Qu'Vat virus, it is safe to conclude that they would be considered members of the HemQuch, should the distinction be mentioned.

The House of Kor is described by Memory Alpha as having 'impeccable aristocratic lineage, its members tended to be elitist – biased against members of lesser Houses, and even treating some Klingons as social outcasts.' But Kor, son of Rynar should be alive during this time as well. And if he looks the way he does in TOS (a few years later) then he should be a QuchHa'.Is Kor, son of Rynar, somebody's shameful secret at this time in Discovery? Do Kor and other QuchHa's experience some kind of vindication between the events of Discovery and TOS?

Will we see a whole QuchHa' story arc on Discovery?. You and I both agree that Trials and Tribble-ations treated the situation as a throw-away joke line. That's all that it was, when that episode came out.But Enterprise spent two full episodes expanding upon that line, turning it from a throw-away into something canonical. You might not personally like what Enterprise did, but that doesn't mean it's not canon. So, if I'm understanding you correctly, when you say that you thin the Klingon Augment virus is just an easter egg, what you're really saying is that you personally wish it were just an easter egg, correct?.

I tend to think that, despite the intentions of Enterprise's writers, the Augment Virus is essentially just an easter egg- that the outbreak was contained and cured relatively quickly and that Kor, Koloth, Kang, and the rest were never actually QuchHa'.Even if QuchHa' were lower-caste or outcastes, we should expect to see some of them on the front lines of the Klingon War in discovery, or perhaps, like Voq, attracted to T'kuvma's cult. On the other hand if reconstructive surgery were available, why would a military governor like Kor not already have had it when he was in his prime rather than waiting for old age?. I disagree about the Augment Virus being an easter egg.

It's a central detail to the main plot of a two-episode story.Out of universe, the following things occurred.TMP remade the Klingons without ever feeling compelled to explain why, TNG further refined the TMP re-design, again with no need for explanation. This was sufficient for many years. Then, when DS9 did 'Trials and Tribble-ations,' the writers only ever intended that O'Brien's conjecture about genetic engineering and Bashir's suggestion of a viral mutation followed by Worf's dismissive 'we do not discuss it with outsiders' would be a cheeky way of winking at the audience, as if to say 'yes, they look different and no we're not getting an explanation for why.' But then when Enterprise did 'Affliction' and 'Divergence,' they really went whole-hog into the creation of an explanation that was the result of both genetic engineering and viral mutation.

Enterprise fully embraced how they sought to create an in-universe explanation for the different looking Klingons. And then many of the novel-writers took the idea and ran with it.As for your other questions:Season 2 has already shown us during the war.Why doesn't Kor have the cure yet? According to (sources that Disco writers might decide to pull from) 'By the year 2270, a cure had been found to restore many QuchHa' back to normal Klingon appearance. This cure was not effective for all QuchHa', and it was not until the early 2290s that a cure was found that restored the standard Klingon physiology of those for whom the earlier cure had been ineffective.'
